750 Acehnese orphans receive OIC scholarship

Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA News) - A total of 750 orphans in tsunami-devastated Aceh province will receive scholarships totaling Rp2.295 billion from the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), a spokesman said.he

"OIC as the world Islamic institution feels called upon to help overcome the post-tsunami problems facing Acehnese orphans," OIC Deputy Director Andri Wahyu said on Friday.

The scholarships cover living costs, tuition fees, health care costs, and mental rehabilitation guidance for a period of 3-15 years.

The 750 orphans living in three sub districts in North Aceh district are the first batch to receive such scholarships. They will receive Rp255,000 per month each.

The Orphan Kafala Program has set a target of providing scholarships for 25,000 orphans in the province.

Aceh bore the brunt of an undersea 8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami on December 26, 2004 when more than 200,000 people were killed.
