Govt to sign contract on Jatigede Dam with Chinese contractor soon

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government will sign a contract with China`s Cynho Hydro Co. Ltd. for the construction of Jatigede dam in Sumedang district, West Java, later this month after a year of negotiations on its contract price, a minister said.

"After we held negotiations with them (Cynho Hydro Co. Ltd.) they agreed to lower the contract price by US$48 million or equivalent to Rp400 billion," Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said on Wednesday.

The negotiations were held after the Chinese company offered a higher contract price, while the Indonesian government could not appoint other building contractor if it used Chinese loans to finance the project, he said.

"But after I told the Chinese ambassador that we would not use the loans because of the higher contract price they later softened their stance and lowered it," he said.

The contract price exceeds China`s loan commitments amounting to US$200 million.

If the government used the Chinese loans, it must set aside counterpart funds amounting to US$19 million to 20 million or 10 percent of the total loans.

Director of Rivers and Dams at the Public Works Ministry Widagdo said the construction of the dam including land clearance would cost an estimated Rp1.5 trillion.

Once the dam is completed, it will be capable of irrigating 90,000 hectares of paddy field and generating 110 MW of electricity.
