South-Korean Posco Interested in East Java Road Project

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: South Korean contractor Posco Engineering & Construction has showed interest in a Rp2,852 trillion toll road construction project to connect two regencies in East Java, Pasuruan and Malang.

Head of the Infrastructure and Area Development of the Planning and Development Agency in Malang, Dwi Siswahyudi said on Friday (12/3) the South Korean company have requested data sharing of the projects which include both technical and non technical.

Some of the data according to Dwi were length, wideand supporting infrastructures of the 54.6 kilometer project. ”They are planning to conduct field survey atthe earliest chance and the Korean government is supporting the company,” Dwi explained.

Posco, he said, came with the request last week and was ready to provide Rp218 billion for construction and surfacing jobs, or about Rp4 billion per kilometer.

The financing does not include costs to take over 358,2 hectares of public land used for the project which consists of 133.91 hectares in Pasuruan Regency, and 224,29 hectares in Malang.

The project is part of the 49 toll road project totalling 1,600 kilometers in Java and some parts of Sumatra and Sulawesi.

Before Posco, Setdco Intrinsic Nusantara an Indonesia – Malaysia joint venture company have bid for the project but was of local business and Malaysia's Intrinsic but the Public Works Department cancelled the company for failing to deliver its US$350 million investment plan.

Pasuruan Regency Administration have also planned to take part in the project by pledging Rp439 billion in 2005 but was failed to move forward with the plan.
