Kapuas to build 219 km special industrial road

Palangkaraya (ANTARA News) - The Kapuas regency administration in Central Kalimantan along with PT Kapuas Tunggal Persada agreed to build a 219 km road to transport industrial goods in the area.

"The MoU had already been made, and the project is scheduled for completion in two years," Kapuas Regent Mawardi said here Friday.

The special road is to change the road for the transportation of coal from the upper to lower reaches which had been used by operating barges through the rivers.

Mawardi hoped the special road will also be used by the mining companies to transport their producers more efficiently rather than by river with its high and low tides.

The special road is also expected to be used by other companies from Barito Utara regency and Murung Raya regency whose mines are already covered by a railroad.

The involvement of PT Kapuas Tunggal Persada is related to limited funds for road construction, and therefore investment from the private sector was needed.

The road will be built from Tanjung Kelanis to the port for shipment of the export goods.

In the meantime, Central Kalimantan governor Agustin Teras Narang said the special road will reduce damage of public roads, especially state and provincial roads, which had often been used for the transportation of heavy loads of industrial goods.

The appreciated the strong wish of the Kapuas and Gunung Mas administrations to build the special road in their respective areas.

Generally speaking Central Kalimantan will have special transportation roads with a total length of 990 kilometers, covering Gunung Mas regency 500.22 km, and Kapuas 489.95 km, comparising two segments, on the right is the 219.35 km Kapuas river basin and on the left the 270.6 km Kapuas river basin.

A special road will also be built from Batengkong to Baronang II with a length of 207 km.

Similar roads were also planned in Kotawaringin Barat regency with a length of 197 km, and in Lamandau regency 167 km.
