Bengkulu to host int`l meeting on earthquake

Bengkulu, Sumatra (ANTARA News) - An Asia-Pacific meeting on earthquake will be organized in Bengkulu Province, Sumatra Island, late 2010.

Some 16 Asia and the Pacific countries would participate in the meeting, Nana Sudjana, head of the Bengkulu provincial natural disaster mitigation office, said here Thursday.

Bengkulu is prone to earthquakes. In September 2007, Bengkulu was rocked by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake which killed at least 18 people and injured around 50 others.

The temblor seriously damaged 6,745 houses, and lightly damaged 13,184 others.

The natural disaster also damaged 277 houses of worship, 885 education facilities, 400 government offices, 331 healthcare facilities, 310 roads and bridges and 194 irrigation systems.
