Yudhoyono to witness North Sulawesi tsunami drill

Manado, North Sulawesi  (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to witness a tsunami drill to be held in North Sulawesi`s capital of Manado on December 26, according to a provincial official. 

North Sulawesi Governor SH Sarundajang here Friday indicated that the president would come to Manado to see on the spot the readiness of local people in anticipating the natural disaster as a magnitude-6 earthquake may jolt the region any time. 

The city of Manado as well as some areas along the coast of North Sulawesi cab be seriously affected by earthquakes with the potential to trigger tsunami. 

Sarundajang expressed hope that all stakeholders in the city will participate in the tsunami drill. 

Since a deadly tsunami hit Aceh and North Sumatera in 2004 killing more than 100.000 people, Indonesia has conducted disaster-handling simulations in some parts of the country, including Aceh, Padang, Bengkulu, Banten and Bali. 

Meanwhile, President Yudhoyono`s activities during his visit in Manado will include attending a Christmas celebration and commissioning a geothermal power plant in Lahendong. 

The president will also inspect preparations for a World Ocean Conference to be held in Manado in May next year.
