PNG to develop major tuna processing centre

Port Moresby (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - Papua New Guinea (PNG) plans to make the country the tuna capital of the world by developing a multi-million kina Madang Marine Park to process Pacific catch, reports The National.

It has identified an 860-acre site at Vidar, outside Madang. The government believes that apart from increasing revenue 10-fold, the project will also create jobs for Papua New Guineans and other Pacific islanders.

PNG's Commerce, Trade and Industry Department, which is developing the concept closely with the Fisheries Authority and industry players, estimates that the project will cost about K100 million (US$36.3 million).
