EC to give Indonesia 500 millions euros worth of grants

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The European Commission (EC) will provide Indonesia with grants worth 500 million euros between 2008 and 2013 with 80 percent of the amount to be allocated to the education sector.

At present the value of EC grant projects in Indonesia was about 500 million euros, including its contributions to post-tsunami rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Aceh, Ad Koekkoek, director of educational, cultural and scientific development cooperation at the Dutch Foreign Ministry, said here Friday.

Indonesia was the second biggest recipient of EC grants to Asian countries after Afghanistan, he said after the signing of a 27.5 million euro cooperation agreement between the European Union and the Indonesian Finance Ministry.

The cooperation was aimed at strengthening the capacity of Indonesia`s human resources in the fields of education and state finances management.

Koekkoek said the two programs would serve as the basis for the EU to provide grants worth 400 million euros for the Indonesian education sector between 2008 and 2013.
