UI to build brain & neural hospital in Depok

Depok, W Java (ANTARA News) - The University of Indonesia (UI) will build an international standard hospital (RSUI) on 20 ha of land in Depok, West Java, as a center for stroke patient treatment, the UI rector said.

University of Indonesia (UI) rector Prof Gumilar Rusliwa Somantri during a post-Ramadhan fasting month get-together at the UI campus here on Wednesday said construction of the hospital, starting in mid-2008, will cost some US$ 200 million.

"RSUI will become a Brain and Neural Center," Gumilar said, adding that the money for building the project take the form of a Japanese assistance.

Gumilar said the construction of the hospital will take about two years, and in 2011 the UI medical faculty in Salemba, Jakarta, will be moved to the campus in Depok.

According to him, the RSUI with sophisticated medical equipment will provide a quick and accurate health services especially in handling brain and neural disorders.

"The UI campus in Salemba will be used only for post graduate programs," Gumilar said.

The rector said that apart from the treatment of patients, the RSUI in Depok will also be provide facilities for education and research, and for the development of medical science.

The RSUI will also serve as a public health center for Depok which has population of about 1.4 million people.

The hospitals in Depok have only 900 beds, Gumilar said.
