Amid an energy crisis and environmental campaigns to phase out the use of fossil fuels, experts agreed Friday that biomass was a suitable and feasible alternative energy source for Indonesia.
Satya Wacana Christian University biomolecular expert Ferry F. Kawur said Indonesia, with its unique tropical climate, was a fertile ground for productive plants that could be a source of environmentally friendly biomass, as reported by Antara.
Biomass sources includes living plants, dead woods and waste.
Ferry was speaking during a launch of a book titled Biomass for Alternative Energy, written by Gan Thay Kong.
Physics professor at Satya Wacana Liek Wilardjo said that people should reduce their energy consumption and also look into the possibilities of developing biomass.
Some environmentalists have supported biomass generated from waste but others oppose biomass generated from palm oil plantations, which they claim destroy primary forests in Indonesia.
