US ready to help Southern Trans-Java highway project

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a United States donor institution, is ready to give a soft loan of US$300 million for the construction of the southern trans Java highway.

"We are to conclude a formal agreement with the MCC to approve the soft loan of US$300 million," Public Works Ministry`s Bina Marga Director General Djoko Murjanto said here on Thursday.

He explained that MCC`s intention to assist to southern Java trans highway project was under discussion at the US Senate, and if being agreed, the design process would be made in 2011 and then continued with physical construction for three years.

Murjanto said the soft loan would be used for the construction of 300-km road of a total 1,567,195 km in the southern coastal area of Java island.

He said the US donor institution had an interest to help develop the southern trans Java road to have an access to the isolated areas.

Murjanto said the soft loan would also be allocated for the construction of a road linking Banten province and West Java province.

He said the proposal for the grant had been handed to the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) to be discussed further.
