Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia has asked Japan to extend technological help so that the country`s automotive industry could increase the local content of its products to 60 percent in the next five years.

"In the next five years we will make low-cost and green cars. I have asked for Japan`s technology to help increase the local content to 60 percent. I am glad they have pledged to study it," Industry Minister MS Hidayat said when receiving a Japanese delegation at his office here on Monday.

He said he had also asked Japan to increase its investment in the steel, automotive and ship-building industries. "If Korea dares to invest US$5 billion in the steel industry, Japan should be able to invest more than US$6 billion," he said.

On the occasion Hidayat emphasized the implementation of the Manufacturing Industry Development Center) covering 13 sub-sectors such as metal working, mold and dies, welding, export and investment promotion, small and medium businesses, automotive, textile, electronics, petro-and oleo-chemical.

"My main demand over the MIDEC is assistance for supporting industries. In the automotive industry components are made here to supply products for exports including assistance for human resources. In the steel and automotive industries, they are willing to discuss at a technical official level," he said.
