Workers in South Korea shift profession

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Sun, 03/08/2009 4:23 PM

Head of the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Overseas Labor (BNP2TKI) Jumhur Hidayat said on Sunday that at least 300 Indonesian laborers in South Korea have shifted profession from the manufacturing and automotive industry to agriculture, food produce and other basic necessities.

"This is part of the agreement," Hidayat told tempointeraktif.com.

According to Hidayat, the government and South Korea have agreed on stalling the return of thousands of Indonesian workers affected by the global financial crisis in South Korea.

The government, he added, has been in discussion with the South Korea Manpower Ministry since last December, which has since been followed by talks between foreign ministers and heads of states.

"Each meeting discusses the plight of our workers in Korea," Hidayat said. (amr)
