Jakarta to open high-quality high school

The Jakarta Post   |   Fri, 03/13/2009 7:08 PM

The Jakarta administration is in a process of opening a special high school that is expected to meet local demand for high-quality education.

Governor Fauzi Bowo said the public school would put an end to a common belief that private school would be the best place to get quality education.

“This is a response to the public’s aspiration of wanting to have a school with the highest quality,” Fauzi said.

Head of Jakarta Education department Taufik Yudi Mulyatno said that the school building, located in Bampu Apus area, Cipayung, cost about Rp 98 billion and that it was funded by the local government by 50 percent and the rest from donors – mostly parents of future students.

Taufik said the school, which would be called Muhammad Husni Thamrin School, would have a standard higher than any international school available in Jakarta.

“It will have several dormitories with 50 rooms each. We also cooperate with Cambridge University so that graduates from the school can enroll for studentship,” he said.

He said that the school would open the first badge of enrolment by the end of March and that all learning activities would commence in July.

To enroll in the high school a candidate must posses an IQ above 120, pass tests on English, Math, Physics, Biology and psychology. (and)
