Govt and ambassador inaugurate Japan-funded bridges

The Jakarta Post | Sat, 02/21/2009 5:48 PM

Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto together with Japan’s Ambassador to Indonesia Toru Maeda inaugurated nine bridges in West Sumbawa on Saturday that were funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The construction of the bridges, which cost approximately Rp 87.1 billion, took about two years and was carried out by a Japanese firm, Hazama Corporation.

West Nusa Tenggara spokesperson Andy Hadianto said the bridges would unlock several areas in the southern part of Sumbawa from isolation and open more economic opportunities for the villagers.

“The areas (in southern part of Sumbawa) are fertile. The new infrastructure will increase the value of the farming products,” he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Andy said JICA would continue to fund 15 other bridges in Sumbawa while the local government would finance the construction of six new bridges. (and)
