Irawaty Wardani, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 01/14/2009 8:23 PM

Indonesia and Netherlands are making initial talks for a prisoner exchange agreement between the two countries, Justice and Human Rights Andi Mattalatta said Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Andi met with Netherlands' Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen in an initial meeting prior to the Netherlands' Judicial Minister Ernest Hirsch's visit to Indonesia in February.

Andi said the judicial minister would sign legal MOU including extradition, mutual legal assistance and transfer of sentenced prisoners.

"They need to make the agreement since there are around 10 Dutch citizen who are detained and facing legal process here; most of them are involved in drug cases," he said. He added that eight of them had been sentenced to prison and the other two were still in a trial process.

The minister also said that the two countries were working a cooperation in immigration matters, which includes giving visa free policy for Dutch people who are working in Indonesia and those that hold diplomatic passport," he said. (dre)
