Jakarta approves Australian Embassy land expansion

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Thu, 01/08/2009 8:06 PM

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo has approved a request from the Australian Embassy to buy up 3.5 more hectares of land to expand their compound in Kuningan, South Jakarta, Antara news agency reported.

"The land is adjacent to the current embassy compound. The Australian government plans to buy the plots, which are private and government properties," Fauzi said after meeting with Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer on Thursday.

Separately, Farmer told journalists that the embassy needed the land expansion because it was adding more personnel.

Although the land expansion has been approved, he added, the embassy wold not start construction soon."It should take several years to build. Right now we're holding a competition for the building design," he said. (dre)
