Britain wants to increase investment in RI`s energy sector

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Britain wants to increase its investment in Indonesia`s energy sector and is interested in the possibility of taking part in the development of oil and gas fields in the D-Alpha Block in Natuna waters in Riau Islands province , a minister said.

The British interest was expressed by a member of the British royal family, Prince Andrew, at a meeting with Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro here on Tuesday (March 2).

Speaking to the press at the presidential office here Thursday about his meeting with the British royal, Purnomo said : "They want to increase their investment in Indonesia. They also want Shell to actively participate in Natuna."

The prince, who had come to Indonesia as his country`s special envoy for international trade and investment affairs, also discussed the recently-initiated nickel mining venture of Rio Tinto in Lasampala, Morowali, Central Sulawesi, with the minister.

During his stay in Indonesia, Prince Andrew also visited the Tangguh natural gas field in Papua last Wednesday (March 5). The natural gas field is run by British Petroleum (BP).

According to Purnomo, the prince had expressed hope that the Tangguh natural gas project worth Rp50 trillion would be successful and become a symbol of bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and the United Kingdom.

The Tangguh gas field was expected to begin producing by the end of 2008. Its output would be exported to Japan, China and the United States.

The prince who is British Queen Elizabeth II`s third child and second son and bears the title of Duke of York visited Indonesia from March 3 to 6, 2008 as part of a tour of several countries to promote Britain among foreign investors.
