French firm to invest in power, clean water in S Kalimantan, Bali

Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - A French company, NTC, is ready to invest in thermal power generation and clean water production and distribution in South Kalimantan and Bali provinces, Thalib of the Regional Capital Investment Coordinating Board (BKPMD) said here on Monday.

He said the Indonesian Embassy in France had sent a letter to South Kalimantan Governor Rudy Ariffin on the French company`s intention to invest in the power and clean water sectors.

Thalib said the French company had expressed its intention to invest in the Indonesian provinces after studying their energy and water resource potentials during an investment promotion exhibition held in Paris in mid-December 2007.

The French company which is engaged in energy and clean-water facilities development was interested in building a clean water plant capable of distributing 3,000-10,000 cu m of water a day.

It had also offered its services in the distribution of clean water to isolated areas which up to now are not yet covered by state-owned tap water company PDAM`s distribution network.

NTC had also offered to build a thermal power plant (PLTU) to supply electricity to areas experiencing power shortages in South Kalimantan.

The French company had requested a reply letter so that it would make preparations for a visit to observe a number of locations in South Kalimantan and Bali.

"We have met with the governor to ask for an approval and reply to the French investment offer," Thalib said.

Thalib said many investors had canceled their investment plans in South Kalimantan because of clean water and power shortages.

He said the French company`s entry into South Kalimantan was expected to help boost investment in the province.

According to the BKPMD official, South Kalimantan during the exhibition in Paris offered investment opportunities in cement production, railways, mining and thermal power generation.
