Unsyiah in Banda Aceh develops tsunami study center

Banda Aceh (ANTARA News) - The Syiah Kuala University(Unsyiah) in Banda Aceh, is developing a tsunami research and disaster mitigation center in association with Kobe University, Japan, and the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency.

"The tsunami research and disaster mitigation center is being developed in view of the importance of familiarizing the people with efforts of mitigating natural disasters, including tsunamis," spokesman for the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency Juanda Djamal said in Banda Aceh on Sunday.

In view of the establishment of the tsunami study center, a four-day international workshop and expo on disaster risk reduction is held at Unsyiah starting on December 8, 2007.

"The workshop is designed to familiarize the public with ways and means to save oneself during a disaster," he added.

The workshop is also attended by delegates from other countries and a number of tsunami experts from Kobe and Nagoya Universities who will submit their papers to the participants.

The expo, also held at Unsyiah will feature photos on Aceh reconstruction, biking and on some other activities.

Unsyiah Rector DR Darni Daud underlined the importance of familiarizing the public with ways and means to overcome natural disasters and save themselves from such disasters, including tsunamis. "The tsunami which hit Aceh three years ago had given us a valuable lesson, as it has killed hundreds of thousands of people," he said.

Darni Daud also said that the tsunami research and disaster mitigation center is designed to familiarize the people with what a tsunami really is, and with ways and means to help themselves during such disasters.
