UAE needs 370,000 semi-skilled workers

JAKARTA (Jakarta Post): The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has offered Indonesia some 370,000 job opportunities in the health, tourism and construction sectors under a special labor agreement between the two countries.

UAE Labor Minister Ali Abdullah Al-Kaabhi said his government would be happy for Indonesian workers to fill all the positions on offer.

"We are in urgent need of 370,000 semi-skilled workers to fill positions in hospitals, hotels, restaurants and construction projects," he said after signing a bilateral labor agreement Tuesday with his Indonesian counterpart Erman Suparno.

"The remuneration system is based on market demands and job competence. The more skilled the workers are, the more they will be paid."

Al-Kaabhi said he appreciated the joint commitment the two countries made in the "simplified but secure" facilitation of employment for Indonesian workers in UAE.

He said Indonesia should train workers to required competence levels.

UAE was the first country in the Middle East to impose harsh sanctions on employers who mistreated migrant workers, Al-Kaabhi said.

"Our labor laws threaten offenders with jail sentences and maximum fines of US$15,000."
