RI to open trade promotion center in Shanghai

Beijing (ANTARA News) - The Trade Ministry is planning to open an Indonesian Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) in Shanghai, China, in 2008 to benefit from the increasing trade opportunities between the two countries.

"According to a plan, the Trade Ministry will open an ITPC in Shanghai next year in anticipation of Indonesia`s participation in a World Expo to be held in the city," Indonesian Ambassador to China Sudrajat said on Friday.

The two countries intended to increase their two-way trade to US$30 billion by 2010 under a strategic partnership signed by Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Indonesian counterpart, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2005.

Sudrajat said the two nations needed to work harder to achieve the target.

Two-way trade between China and Indonesia has shown an upward trend in recent years. It stood at US$13.5 billion in 2004 and increased to US$16.8 billion in 2005.

In 2005, Indonesia was China`s 19th biggest export destination with a total value of US$8.35 billion or 1.11 percent of its total exports.

Meanwhile, China`s imports from Indonesia in 2005 were valued at US$8.43 billion or 1.28 percent of its total imports, making Indonesia the 18th biggest supplier of goods to China.

Sudrajat said Indonesia`s participation in World Expo 2010 was of great significance to show the world community the progress the country had made in the technological sector.

The expo would be the biggest ever held, he said.

To date, 149 countries and 18 international organizations had confirmed their plans to take part in the expo, the event`s commissioner general, Hua Junduo, said recently.
