Train to link Medan to airport

MEDAN (Jakarta Post): North Sumatra will build a train line to connect Medan city to Kuala Namu in Deli Serdang regency where the province's airport is currently being built.

The provincial administration signed a MoU on the plan with PT Railink, a joint venture between train company PT Kereta Api Indonesia and airport management firm PT Angkasa Pura II, on Friday.

The train route is expected to be completed in late 2008, or a year earlier than the airport.

North Sumatra Governor Rudolf Pardede said the train would support operation of the Kuala Namu airport, which will replace the current Polonia airport.

"The train will take passengers from Medan train station to Kuala Namu airport," he said in his speech Friday.

Railink's president, Masraul Hidayat, said the 3.7-km track, which is estimated to cost around Rp 10 to Rp 15 billion to construct, will start from Araskabu station in Medan and end at the airport. -- JP
