PLN Asks for Permission to Release Assets

Wednesday, 07 November, 2007 | 10:45 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:PT PLN (the State Electricity Company) has asked for permission to sell off several assets.

The proceeds of these sales will be used in order to provide funding for electricity power development.

PLN Managing Director Eddie Widiono said that this was the only way to make PLN independent and competitive.

“If necessary, PLN asks for permission to release its assets in order to find funding,” said Eddie at the PLN Head Office building, Jakarta, Wednesday (7/11).

The assets release, he said, was one of PLN's ways to have more electricity infrastructure amounting to 35,000 megawatts, 26,000 kilometers of transmission and 390 kilometers of distribution.

This electricity demand of 35,000 megawatts, he said, was the estimate for 2015 as electricity demand rises around six percent a year.

The funding need for additional infrastructure is around Rp350 trillion or US$40 billion.

Funding can be from the State Budget, PLN's budget and the involvement of the private sector.

“Once this additional infrastructure is complete, PLN will be ready to be independent and competitive,” said Eddie.

When asked for comment, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said that regarding funding it was completely PLN's affair.

“That's corporate business,” he said.
