Germany's Epcos investing $10 million in Batam

The Jakarta Post

BATAM (Antara): Germany-based electronics componentmanufacturer Electronics Parts and Components (Epcos) has invested US$10 million in THE Panbil industrial zone here.

Epcos had decided to do business in Batam as the industrialized island had a competitive edge, Epcos supervisory board chairman Klaus Ziegler said Monday.

Epcos Indonesia will begin producing car heating and cooling systems in June 2008, said Ziegler who claimed he had known Batam for the past 18 years.

Epcos Indonesia's CEO Stephen Samuel said the company's products would be exported to countries around the globe.

Batam industrial island was more competitive compared to Malaysia's Iskandar industrial area and to other industrial zones in Southeast Asia, he said.

Samuel expressed confidence that the Indonesian government's program to implement a free trade area (FTA) in Batam, Bintan and Karimun islands would be successful.

Epcos's factory, which would be built on 20,000 square meters of land out of a total 43,000 square meter area projected, would create jobs for 1,500 local people.
