LIPI-Japan cooperation in research on earthquakes

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) have expanded their cooperation to include a joint research on natural disasters.

"The cooperation between LIPI and JSPS was started in 1978 with the signing of an MoU by the Director General of JSPS, and it was later extended," LIPI Deputy Chief Prof Dr Lukman Harun told journalists here on Friday.

The MoU which was only aimed at enhancing the cooperation in the field of sciences, especially in developing basic sciences, was revised on August 29, 2006 by LIPI Chief Prof Dr Umar Anggara Jenie and JSPS President Motoyuki Ono, to include cooperation in dealing with earthquakes.

The sectors under the earthquake cooperation in West Java and Aceh include the application of the global positioning system (GPS) which involved Indonesian geotechnologists Dr Danny Hilman of LIPI, Dr Hasanuddin Z Abidin from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Dr Wahyu Triyoso of ITB and some experts from Japan.

At present, the cooperation between LIPI and JSPS included some programs like joint projects in the field of multilateral programs on marine sciences, exchange of researchers, research work, and seminars.
