Seven Companies Ready to Form Palapa Ring Consortium

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Seven companies have stated their readiness to form a consortium of national fiber optic network construction project worth US$1.517 billion or around Rp13 trillion.

The seven companies will sign the memorandum of the project known as Palapa Ring next Wednesday (16/5).

Basuki Yusuf Iskandar, Director General of Post and Telecommunications, said that the consortium business model was taken to overcome the need of large funds for the Palapa Ring project.

“Together, the cost burden will be lesser,” said Basuki after the transfer of Information and Communication minister post at the Information and Communication Department building, Jakarta, Wednesday (9/5).

He explained that the ownership of the fiber optic network will be submitted to each of the companies in the business scheme consortium.

The government only acts as facilitator for each company.

The companies that are ready to join the Palapa Ring consortium are PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk. (Telkom), PT Indosat Tbk., PT Exelcomindo Pratama,Tbk., PT Infokom Elektrindo, PT Bakrie Telecom Tbk., PT Powertek Utama Internusa and PT Nusantara Ekaprana Teknoguna Kelola.
