Jakarta, 07 March, 2007 (Tempo Interactive) - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro has stated that four countries are interested in constructing a nuclear-powered electricity generating plant (PLTN) in Indonesia.

The four countries include France, Japan, Korea and the United States.

“Germany is perhaps interested as well,” said Purnomo on Monday (03/05).

According to him, the construction of the PLTN will be carried out between 2015 and 2017.

Purnomo went on to say that currently the government is carrying out inter-agency coordination to set up a Nuclear Power Advisory Council.

He also said that nuclear power utilization was also related with research, development, mining, manufacturing, production, distribution, storing, transferring, export, import, usage, decommissioning and radioactive waste management.

The government has already chosen the Muria region in Jepara, Central Java, as the location for building the PLTN.

For the time being, a study on the environmental impact is being conducted there.
